billy preston doing george harrison
Welcome into my nirvana. Billy Preston singing "My Sweet Lord" while playing a Hammond. THAT'S ALL I HAVE IN THIS WORLD, FOLKS.

Get some Northern soul up in here.
evelyn freeman and the exciting voices
Remember that time some ballers decided to name their band the Exciting Voices. Took guts but IT AIN'T BRAGGING IF IT'S TRUE, whatever that means. Also, I got that picture from Evelyn Freeman's driver's license. JOKE CITY .
This single was released in 1958 and I dare you not to start shaking along. How much hollering is taking place? Also, that thumping drum line? Jesus H. It's not really known for sure, but supposedly there are around 14 people in the Exciting Voices. And then Ms. Evelyn, who has a Master's in destroying my ear drums (in the best way possible). Take a listen and see how Evelyn is so intense, she doesn't even give you time to answer the question she poses.

I SAID HEY
Every once in a while, the channel ABC Family offers me something great. Of course, they take out all the sexual stuff and bleep the bad words, but still. This morning, I happened to stumble upon a showing of Robin Hood: Men in Tights, the Mel Brooks classic that never gets old. This is one of my favorite scenes and really emphasizes why the other new Robin Hood can just go to hell.

hey! part 2
Tarsiers lip-synching to Jay-Z. There is nothing left to say. An homage to this post.

surfing alpaca makes waves in my heart
If you work with me/know me/follow me on Google Reader/exchange a glance with me that makes me think you want to talk, then you probably have heard me talking about this surfing alpaca. I really don't know the backstory on this guy, nor do I need to know. All I need is the genius of one photographer to capture this most mysterious and lovely moment in time.

tight person of the day: shorty long
Shorty Long. First of all, what a baller name. And secondly, just look at him! I'm gonna dunk him in my coffee.
Shorty was a songwriter and singer that joined Motown in 1963. He actually co-wrote "Devil With the Blue Dress On" that we all know and love. From what I've read, it seems Shorty struggled a bit after that at Motown. Bigger acts like Marvin Gaye were getting all the hits, and no one really seemed to be working with Shorty to crank it out. However, he did have a big hit with "Here Comes the Judge" in 1968 that charted. That same year, he recorded "Night Fo' Last," which is a huge jam for me. When I bought this on 45, my life changed. I love this song so much. The best part of the 45 for this single is that it includes an instrumental version on the flip. Baller!
Shorty had some great tunes, but sadly he DROWNED in 1969 before he really got cookin'. Let the music live on and jam some Shorty tonight!

contender for best dad ever award
So, this guy, Jim, has a little daughter. Every Saturday, he makes her whatever kind of pancake she requests and then blogs about the process. He makes animals, buildings, even necklaces. Can you believe this guy? What a great dad. She will remember that forever AND it's on the interweb for her to read about later when she gets over her embarrassment.
I've recently become obsessed with following his blog and I really like to see what he makes for his kid next. Check him out and also peep this sampling of some of his finest work. I mean, seriously. GENIUS ON THE GRIDDLE. Also, CHOCOLATE CHIP EYES.
