tight person of the day: wayne mcghie
Wayne McGhie is a Jamaican who ended up gaining fame in Canada and releasing a funk album. How baller? In the late sixties, Wayne moved to Toronto from his native Jamaica to write songs for fellow singers. He was making a name for himself in the city as a top notch writer. Wayne had many great connections that helped when it came time for him to record his own debut album. His personnel on the album included Alton Ellis and was produced by Jackie Mittoo. I mean, this guy knew what he was doing.
Wayne and his band Sounds of Joy released their debut album in 1970, featuring the song I'm sharing today. Get this: shortly after it was released, the record company's warehouse had a ginormous fire and all the other copies were totally lost. How bananas is that? So, basically, this became an extremely hard album to find but it's so great. It's funky and soulful and has reggae all thrown in there and mixed around. It was reissued sometime in the nineties, so people could get their paws on this amazing album once again.
I am loving the horns on this and the superb screams of Wayne. That horn intro! I just adore this song. Everything about it is perfect.

tight person of the day: betty harris
When it comes to soul music, there is an unspoken rule. If your name is Betty, then you are primed to be the tightest person around. I mean, really! Betty Harris is a goddess. She looks eight feet tall and ready to dominate in that photo. Luv her.
I first learned of Betty through her cover of Solomon Burke's hit "Cry to Me." Dirty Dancing, anyone? She slowed it wayyyy down and it made things get real sexy. Which is hard to do, considering Solomon's was also sexing things up.
Here's the Solomon song:
And Betty's version:
So, you can see (or hear) that Betty is an amazing vocal talent. In the sixties, Betty was being produced by Allen Toussaint. She released several singles during this time, but never really had the breakout success of some other ladies we know today, like Miz Aretha. I really enjoy Betty's ballads. The song I'm sharing today is from 1968 and is a more upbeat Betty (even though she's singing about a mean man - just go with it).

edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros
I've been jamming this song lately. Everything about it gets me amped. I love the whistling at the beginning, the voices of the male and female leads, the drums, the trumpet, the HEY parts. EVERYTHING.
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros have like ten members and look like a traveling hippie troupe. Already sold. They come from L.A. and are gathering quite the following with this song. Her voice is so amazing. She can read me a bedtime story if she wants. Also, the lady and bro singing are really in love in real life! That adds an element for me.

soul train line dance
I really can't describe to you how much I love this footage. I watch it daily. Everyone is having such a damn good time. Man, people really knew how to get down on Soul Train. Best show around. I long to do this partner choreography. Someone learn it with me! This clip is from 1973 and also features a totally badass song.
P.S. I also want to be every woman in this clip.

mambo dog becomes my dream pet
Someday, I want a dog. They are tons of work, but I think the joy a dog can give you is so pure and true. Well, guess what? I ain't accepting no dog unless he/she can do the mambo like this badass right here. This is the smartest dog in the world. Also, the smartest person in the world created that dog mambo skirt. Brills.
I have an extreme love of dogs walking/dancing/moving on their hind legs and this helps me live my life better. Thanks, Mambo Dog.
