wallet time capsule

This is tight. This cable guy was working in a crawl space and he stumbled upon an old wallet. Upon investigating, he realized the wallet belonged to a plumber who was carrying it circa 1963. How baller is this? What a great find. I won't spoil what's in the wallet for you - but just rest assured that this guy was practicing safety in many areas of his life.

who remembers lil' penny?

This little baller was all in the rage in 1996. Who remembers? He was a creepy puppet version of Penny Hardaway, who was playing for Orlando Magic at the time. I was so obsessed with Lil' Penny. I used to drop everything when the commercials came on. Check out his little Nikes! He was also voiced by Chris Rock. Note to all puppeteers: give your puppet a Chris Rock voice and it will be huge.

Santa didn't bring me a pair of Air Penny IIs this year, but I keep wishing. FOR REAL!

There are several Lil' Penny commercials to choose from, but this is a personal fave. This is so clear in my memory it's like it just aired. The tiny swim trunks. I am literally dying.

christmas series #8: louis armstrong

Can you believe Christmas is this FRIDAY?! Oh my, I'm so excited. One part of Christmas that can get a bit frustrating is the shopping. People start driving like maniacs around these parts and I start to want to avoid any mall that was ever constructed. One thing that helps during those busy last few days before Christmas is having some good Christmas tunes to get you through. Good thing I do!

Are you ready to listen to Louis Armstrong killing it on a Christmas song? Get ready. This baller.

Louis is a raspy voiced King of Everything from Nawlins. Obvi, he was meant to grace this earth. He's one of the greatest musicians of all time. He was extremely talented in the trumpet department, but his voice was such a signature that it instantly creates a tear flowage so strong from my eye and nasal area that I have to leave any room where he is playing. His collaborations with Ella Fitzgerald really can't be topped. Also, did you know he adopted a boy that was mentally disabled and he took care of him until the day he died? True Christmas spirit happening, y'allz.

So during the Christmas season, listen to some uplifting Louis Armstrong and get ready for serious countdown. It's almost here!

halloween music edition #1

(Don't worry, I'm not posting "Thriller.")

How can it already be Halloween? Seriously. What are you going as for Halloween? Last year I was Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka. This year I'm going with Frida Kahlo after nixing my Ravi Shankar idea. Not quite ready to gender bend yet! The countdown to Saturday is on, so I thought I would provide you with some Halloween-ish tunes to get you amped.

Obvi, Francis Albert Sintra is a baller of his time. High waisted trouser pants need to make a comeback on dudes. This guy has like a million Grammys (approximately) and even won an Oscar. Beyonce only wishes. Sinatra started singing in the thirties with some swing guys like Tommy Dorsey. I listen to XM 40s on 4 in my car on the regular and I die when some Dorsey comes on. It's the best driving-to-work-early-in-the-morning-station. ANYWAY.

During the forties, Sinatra was king. I remember my grandmother saying one time that she always had a crush on Sinatra. Probs because of those blue eyes. Lady killer! He made an easy transition to sort of a swinger-type persona in the fifties. Hello, Vegas. During this time, he recorded "Witchcraft." THIS RELATES TO HALLOWEEN, GET IT? I really like Sinatra and I don't really like being scared so I want to make this Halloween Music Edition 2k9 #1.

Stop Working & Calm Down

This is kind of precious. Normally I would be so frustrated watching this clip, but this cat is a gentle baller.

R.I.P. les paul

Rest in peace, you old devil. This guy. I saw his show in Manhattan a year ago and it was something I will always remember. Especially when he made jokes about his private areas. What a baller.

tight person of the day: sol k. bright

I'm in a tropical mood today. It's my last week of teacher summer before heading back to the grind. I have had so many glorious weeks off. I have done absolutely nothing. Well, that's not totally true. I did drive myself into debt record shopping and manage to watch almost every episode of Golden Girls. ANYWAY, since I'm nearing the end of my summer, I'm doing everything I can to hold on to it. That includes putting on a lei and making some kind of pineapple drink and pretending I am in Hawaii. There is no better music for that daydream than Sol K. Bright.

Sol is a baller. He did a little bit of everything and has made Hawaii proud. He was a songwriter, singer, and band leader and was making a killing in Hawaii and even Japan. He was a big band type leader in the thirties! How crazy is that? He had a band called the Hollywaiians. I'm in love. Sol was also a super talented steel guitar player. I have been listening to the song "La Rosita" on repeat for a while now trying to capture summer in a bottle. I have also been listening to this one but the embedding is disabled. Time to get tropical.

If anyone knows more about Sol, I want to hear about it. I can't dig anything else up about him, really. I also would kill to have his stuff on vinyl.

I would punch in a window for even a good mp3 of this song, though vinyl would obviously be the ultimate.

I was hoping that Beat Electric had posted In the Grooves, but I don't think they have. This song makes me want to get on a dance floor in a bad way. I would Soul Train the hell out of it.

dirty car art

Here's more proof that nutbags/ballers come out of Texas. Viva Tejas! This guy, Scott Wade, takes dry paintbrushes and creates scenes on dirty windshields. Is this tight? Why didn't I think of this? Oh, that's right, because I have no artistic abilities. Check out some of his work. It's really unbelievable. More here.

obama shows the skillz

Apparently, Barack be ballin'. Haters to the left.

Now where is the video of Hillz doing the pommel horse? LOL city.

Hillz, I still loves you.
