I'm here to spread the word. I'm officially obsessed with this song. I've been playing it at least ten times an hour. If you do the math, you will realize that is many minutes dedicated to the electrofunk groove of The Gap Band. I simply can't with these guys. I have so many karaoke dreams attached to this song that it's not even funny.

First of all, there is a AN ACTUAL BOMB SOUND on the record. Like, a bomb is descending throughout. If you couldn't figure out what they are actually saying, even though they articulate well, the bomb sound says it all.

Secondly, I am a six year old at heart and always die laughing thinking about these guys really singing about farts. Sorry. I have to be honest. It's my blog and I'll cry if I want to (from a terrible fart).

I know TONS of teams use this during sporting events. It's a great song to play when scoring a goal, touchdown, basket, etc. I am currently in boot camp to become a professional NFL kicker just so I can use this song. I don't care what team I'm on or where I will have to move. All that matters now is becoming a super famous football player and having this be my sig song. Suck on that, America!

Dennis is a true badass. He is a guitarist from Detroit that has played on dozens of recordings, including some major Motown hits. He also looks like a true C++ nerd. Just saying. You might know him from his hit "Scorpio." He is really a gifted musician. Can't deal with the chill vibe of this song. It's great for playing while you finish up those eleven Words with Friends games you've been neglecting. Enjoy, mi amigos!

But the important thing is this: IT'S ALMOST CHRISTMAS. Usually I do a countdown to Christmas with various soul songs that honor the season. I blew that off this year to drink wine, get a sinus infection, and eat entire bags of Skittles at one in the morning.

But I do have something fun for you. First of all, it's Friday. Christmas is in two days. We are also in the midst of Hanukkah. I have a festive Friday song for all of us.

Lately, I've been down in the dumps a little. I'm not going to lie. I miss summer and swimming every day whenever I wanted. I miss drinking my iced coffee and listening to records and reading on the couch in my Old Navy shorts from 1999 that no one ever sees.

Basically, I'm trying to tell you that I really miss not having to go to work. #firstworldproblems

Here's the thing though: When I'm down in the dumps - even a little - I usually want sad, dumpy music to accompany that. I was listening to a crazy mix I have called "Malt Shop Memories." (I know right - LOLZ.) Well, this song is on there. It's got a sad tone and at first, I was settling into it. But then, something happened. I was transformed. This is actually a sweet little love song. It seems to me like the couple in the song really want to work it out. They want to give it a shot. Well, hell, I thought, if they can give it a shot, I can give lifting MY spirits a go. So, here we are, posting on the blog and ordering caftans on Etsy (real thing I'm also doing).

I think this song is what most people, or any people, know The Casinos for. They were made up of ten members - nine bros and a Hammond organ. Joking! But seriously, the Hammond organ is like a person to me. Very special. I think what's amazing about this song is that it charted in 1967. People were pretty much over this type of music by then. But it just goes to show that everyone loves a good love song. Especially one with hope! Even me.

Please to enjoy this wonderful Motown hit from 1965, "Darling Baby." I can't confirm this, but I'm pretty sure this was their first single, released as a B-side.

Obvi, I love The Elgins because they have already been tight people of the day.

pure jamaican soul

I really can't say enough about this song. It's so pure and sweet and speaks to me so clearly that I feel like I had some part in its creation.

This is a wonderful song called "I'm Still Waiting." You'll recognize The Wailers, who you may know because they later became the backing band for a dude named BOB MARLEY. Well, this is just Bob, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer performing way back in 1965 as the Wailing Wailers with back-up singers. This was before Bob met Rita, before he turned to the Rastafari movement, before the reggae sound developed that we are probably most familiar with. They are just bebes here and you can really hear the R&B influence.

If you ever find the Greatest Hits of Studio One album, I highly suggest you buy it immediately. These early Wailers songs are truly priceless.

The tenderness of Bob's voice here is really too much to handle. It's Jamaican me crazy. (Sorry.)

ANNA FACT: I am into some disco songs. I feel like they are the perfect background for a summer day around the house. For example, today I listened to the 45 I have of this song OVER AND OVER while I swept, dusted, and made iced coffee. Sound good? Well, join me in a little listen of this tight tune and we can be disco dynamos together today.

Can you handle this sweet groove? The singing duo of Bo and Ruth will take you to dance town. Bo Kirkland and Ruth Davis were both recording independently until they were put together by their label do an album. It was released in 1976 and this song was quite a smash. Unfortunately, the label folded shortly after that. I recommend this single but also looking for any Bo and Ruth that you can find.

FUN FACT: The B side of this 45 is a song called "Stay Out My Kitchen (If You Can't Stand The Heat)." Laugh out loud.

The Wallace Brothers - I'll Step Aside/Hold My Hurt For A While

Young Southern soul coming at you! How cute are those guys? Apparently they were really teeny tiny when they recorded this. Like, 16 years old. I was wearing gross shorts that showed my ass, drinking Mocha Frappuccinos, and getting speeding tickets when I was 16, so these guys obviously knew what was fresh.

This single was released in 1965 on Sims and I have to say I fell for it immediately because of that sweet piano. Also the way the singer (not sure which "Brother" that is) pronounces "hurt." This song is a blanket that I can use during my sweet afternoon nap. So much good information about the Wallace Brothers can be found here.

Robert Parker - Barefootin'/Let's Go Baby (Where The Action Is)

CONFESSION: I already owned the 45 of "Barefootin'" and it's one of my personal faves. Love me some Nawlins soul. I also loved the B side but I hadn't listened to it as much. HUGE MISTAKE. This song is super tight. Also, can you even DEAL with that picture of Robert showing his bare foot to those ladies. I mean, seriously, you guys. The Internet giveth. These songs were released in 1966 on NOLA. As with most Robert Parker, it's sure to get you on the dance floor. His voice is incredibly smooth.

The Lamp Sisters - Sweet Daddy Soul/Today Will Be Yesterday Tomorrow

I'm having trouble finding information on this group. Although this single appears to be from 1969, released on Duke out of Houston. I'm so into this song. Who doesn't need a good oooohhh weeee to keep you going? The B side is also really pretty. I plan to use the title for my future Sci-Fi movie that I'm going to write.

In Los Angeles recently, I got to do a number of fun things. LA is a great place. One thing I did was chill in a room at the Village Studios. There was some kind of mix playing that had an interesting selection of tunes. One in particular caught my ear and I used my favorite audiophile app, Shazam, to discover what it was.

I'm no scientist who's made an exciting discovery. I've never felt the joy (ugh) of giving birth. I've never seen a baby deer take its first steps or worked with animals covered in oil and then cleaned them and released them back into the ocean. These people experiencing these things have felt great satisfaction and pleasure that is certainly unequaled.

Well, I have felt greater pleasure.

When I Shazamed this song, my heart opened. Turns out, the song is called "Fancy Pants" and it's by a Mr. Al Hirt, a trumpet player from Nawlins.

Would you just look at him? Squeezable.

This guy is pretty tight. The more I read about him, the more amazing facts I learned. For example, did you know Al Hirt wrote the theme song for the Green Hornet television show? Fact. Also, did you know Al Hirt is a classically trained musician? Fact. And that Al Hirt recorded an album with Ann-Margret called Beauty and the Beard? Fact. (And probably my favorite.) AL HIRT.

This song was the hilarious theme for the rest of my trip in Los Angeles, and is now the official theme song of Anna Roch Enterprises ©. When I hear it, my heart soars but I also want to scramble to the nearest thrift store, buy a pair of overalls, get a piece of grass between my teeth, and dance down South Congress letting the world know that I am wearing my FANCY PANTS. Please pay special attention to the horns in this song. They are not only fancy, but extremely hilarious. ALSO THE LYRICS ARE REALLY EASY TO LEARN.

RIP Desco but I'm so glad Daptone was born from you.

Desco Records was around in the mid nineties and focused on providing quality soul 45s. The Daktaris recorded on Desco before its demise and eventual growth into Daptone and Soul Fire (RIP Soul Fire but their stuff is on Truth & Soul now). A lot of the Daktaris guys went on to become members of Antibalas.

Oh, Annette. I love this lady so much. She is my go-to musical choice when folding laundry and putting said laundry away in drawers. When I listen to her sing, I feel transported. I want a flapper haircut and some kitten heels and some Prohibition alcohol.

At the end of every song she sings, Annette cheekily says "That's all!" This kills me for some reason. When I first got some of her stuff, I would listen for the finale send-off to every song like a dog waiting for a whistle. She is precious.

Annette was doing her jazzy thang in the twenties, y'all. She recorded into the thirties, but then gave up show business completely to start a family. She walked away from being a supremely popular singer at the time. She was working and living in Manhattan and was pretty well known. In 2008, Annette was rediscovered (and discovered by me) when artist Nina Paley used many of her songs for her animated telling of the Ramayana in Sita Sings the Blues. (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY THE WAY.)

I just love her sweet and tender voice. I hope you enjoy it while sipping on a Pimm's Cup. Happy Almost Summer to you all!

SXSW 2011. Land of dreams and kebabs and happy hours at Taverna and pedi cabs. Home of new musical discoveries and nightmarish hipster visions. Yes, this festival has it all and then some.

This year, SXSW was a total thrill ride for me. Yes, I needed several pep talks in the St. David's parking garage daily to keep going (thanks, Yaelie) but we made it through. We lived like queens through the streets of Austin. Nothing is better than walking into Stubb's without having to wait because YOU HAVE A PLATINUM BADGE (thanks, LP). A month later, I've had time to reflect.

This year, one person dominated my entire experience. No, not Kanye. I didn't even attempt to the get to the power plant. I'm talking about the most amazing performer I've ever seen live.

Charles Bradley.

I am planning on another post later to truly showcase my deep, deep love for this man. But I must share this gem with you first. Y and I dancing, in earnest, to his performance at Cedar Street Courtyard with the Menahan Street Band.

Obvi, we have no idea we are being filmed. This is also apparent because I am clearly dressed like a 4th grade boy ready for recess. Who wears horizontal stripes on camera, America? And Old Navy jeans from 2003 made into jorts?

SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T GIVE A F AND JUST WANTS TO DANCE.

We are FEELING it. It's like a religious experience. The first few seconds are just me with a giant grin, watching Charles and his unbelievable hip work. Are we dead serious with those moves? Also, Y and I synced up. How.

Some things I love:

Y's amazing YELLING during the song.
Y's arm slice.
My inability to do anything but gape at Charles.
My spirit fingers.

Some things I hate:

Clothing choice on my part.
That this is on the web.
That we aren't a meme yet.
What I did in front of the amazing and hard-working musicians of the Menahan Street Band/Daptone Records/Truth and Soul.
That I can't watch this video at work to get my daily fix because YouTube is blocked there.
That Charles isn't performing in my living room right now.

tight person of the day: sweet emma barrett

Another day, another tight person. I am ready to unleash all over this blog again. I haven't given it the proper attention for some time, but things have really been busy here in Austin, Tejas. I want to kick it off again with an amazing woman, someone truly deserving of recognition here at Is This Tight.

The beautiful and talented Sweet Emma Barrett. Just look at her. The jingle bells around her legs!? I can't even deal. These bells led her to be known as the Bell Gal, also a super tight nickname, in my opinion.

Sweet Emma is from Nawlins, and rose to fame singing and playing piano with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (also worth a post). She recorded several tight albums in the sixties, including this one, a personal fave of mine.

She suffered a stroke but kept right on tickling. The thing is, she's a total diva in the best sense. I am in awe of her when I watch videos of her performing. To me, she just seems to personify the New Orleans spirit and what the music from that iconic town means to me. Sassy, funky, soulful, and unique. She wasn't afraid to play those dirty bars and did it her whole life. I hope you love watching her as much as I loved Google image searching her.

christmas series #13: ray charles and betty carter

First of all, I still get creeped out by the resemblance between Jamie Foxx and Ray.

Secondly, I am super into how many Bettys there are in music. Betty Carter is another Betty in a long list of ballers. She's an incredibly talented jazz singer.

In conclusion, I know that everyone and their dawg has covered this song but it remains a personal favorite of mine during the holidays. I also think this is one of the best versions. How smooth? These two BAMFs made an album together in 1961 that included this classic duet. I don't know about you, but this album gives me reason to believe that Santa is real. BECAUSE IT'S MAGICAL AND IF IT'S MAGIC THEN SANTA IS REAL BECAUSE SANTA IS MAGIC.

It's safe to say that this album helped out with Betty Carter's popularity, although she is a really gifted vocalist. You should look up her stuff sometime. Ray, of course, never really stopped being popular but I'm still mad that an actor with two Xs in his name won an Oscar for playing him. (PERSONAL JAMIE FOXX RANT PART #322. It's why I couldn't include a picture of Jamie above side by side with the Ray one, even though that makes perfect sense.)

"Baby, It's Cold Outside" really puts me in a winter mood. Even though it's literally 80 degrees in Austin today and I saw a girl wearing a tank top and jean shorts. Hopefully Santa doesn't get confused by the warm weather and the big man still knows we are here waiting. If it's cold where you are, enjoy this slowed down and exciting version of a great song. I now present to you the return of the Christmas series. Today I saw a woman wearing this shirt:

UGH. Sorry, I just thought it was funnier to show the dog version. ANYWAY, it reminded me that I needed to get started sharing the most delightful holiday soul/all-around baller music I can find.

Desmond Dekker was a Jamaican reggae singer, who also looks like a total baller in a tux. (See Exhibit A.) He also has an album called Double Dekker. PUNNY. You might know him by his hit, "Israelites." It was a smash hit in 1968 and was pretty groundbreaking at the time, considering it was popular and sounded that authentic and tight. "Christmas Day" was also released in 1968, at the height of Desmond's popularity in the USA.

Heat up the Swiss Miss and enjoy the delightful sound of Desmond and his band, The Aces. I LOVE his song talking explaining the birth of Jesus H. and also the amazing back-up singing. Then that incredible "Joy to the World" part comes out of nowhere. How good is Desmond? Desmond passed on in 2006, but listening to this song during the holidays will surely help keep his memory alive.

I am sharing a song with you today, "Have Another Drink and Talk to Me," that I really enjoy that Pep (we have little nicknames for each other) recorded in 1952. Confession time: I long to do a duet of this song at karaoke. Of course, I can't sing like Emmylou Harris. DUH.COM/IJUSTYELLINTHEMIC. But the point is, I really love this song. I want to share the pure joy of this song with someone on stage. It might never happen, but I can dream and blog and dream.

Emmylou Harris met Gram Parsons in 1972 and they recorded a bit in California together. Their relationship seems somewhat of a mystery. He was married at the time, but how close were they? Whatever the true answer, it only adds to the intensity of the song for me. Great sunset driving song. Their voices fit together perfectly. This song appears on Gram's album Grevious Angel, which was released after his death. ALSO A TOTALLY AMAZING ALBUM.

I am uploading this song today because I really want you to download it and listen to it over and over. I just did while eating a bowl of strawberries with Nutella and staring out the window.

So, a hurricane is messing up my evening. Raining ALL DAY and won't stop. I just had to run in it due to lack of parking spots. I really hate rain if it doesn't bring cold. Granted, the temps are better here now but still. COMPLAINT ZONE.

Anyway, so I was thinking about what I needed to really fit this mood. I decided a little Count Basie could do the trick. I love these slower Count Basie orchestra tunes. How perfect are they for rainy days? This song was arranged and recorded in the fifties during a European tour. Jazz was big there during this time period. There's just something about it.

I want to give someone the soul finger every now and then. But for good reasons.

Of course, we love those crazy Bar-Kays. They were Otis Redding's back-up band until Otis and most of the band died tragically. Two remaining members built the group back up and took it to its funky zone. 1967's "Soul Finger" is highly enjoyable and the horns are extremely tight.

If someone put this on and started making me a drink while I sat and did nothing, I might possibly marry that person.

I really love New Orleans soul and I really LOVE ladies from New Orleans singing soul. Check out Barbara George. She's rocking a cross necklace and some bling bling on her ring fing. This lady WROTE and sang her hit in 1961, "I Know (You Don't Love Me No More)," which was covered by many people later. All of these are slightly different than Barb's version, but all super tight. Also, CHER.

Help!, the amazing Beatles movie, is in my top 10. DUH.COM. I really love the movie, the album, the men in general. I hate when people dismiss the Beatles just because it seems awesome to not like them because everyone does. THEY ARE FANTASTIC. Deal.

Anyway, I love this part of the movie. Mostly for the casual blue jean Friday look that is happening. Beatles on the beach! Stoic Ringo stroking a guitar! John Lennon silliness factor set to 11! So tight.

Once again, I must give props to my iTunes. Besides being my secret boyfriend, it constantly supplies me with treasures I forgot I even had. Don't get me wrong, I love digging for records and discovering great things. But putting my iTunes on shuffle will often satisfy my soul.

EXAMPLE: Today it totally played a baller track, "You Left the Water Running" by Maurice and Mac. About a year ago, I was into researching duos. I compiled a bunch of songs by dudes like Sam and Dave, Sam and Bill, Eddie and Ernie, and Bob and Earl. (All ballers, by the way.) Maurice and Mac were a part of this search and I wound up really liking some of their tunes.

Maurice and Mac were both members of the Radiants in the mid sixties when they left the group. They released some super tight songs, including the one I'm sharing today, in 1968 on Checker but never really found the fame they probs desired. An LP was never released by these guys!

Tonight, I will toast my wine to Maurice and Mac.

This weekend, I took an adventure to Dallas. We stopped by Bill's, the well-known record store, to search for some vinyl. Let me tell you right now, I was covered in dirt and left with a heightened sense of panic. That store is nuts! There is literally no organization in the 7-inch section.

Doesn't that get your heart rate going? Where do you even start? Anyway, after a while of digging, I managed to find some good things. There are tons of 45s just hanging out without sleeves, and lots and lots of damaged 45s. But I found some diamonds in the coal mine.

Now y'all know how much I love the ladies of Motown. SO MUCH. These ladies can really kill it, but I feel they are somewhat unknown. The Velvelettes (tight name) were hanging around Motown in the sixties along with my sisters Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and the Supremes. At times, they have been a quartet, a quintet, and a trio. Problem was, they never seemed to match the success of their labelmates.

In 1964, the group recorded "Needle in a Haystack." It became a chart success, and brought attention to the group at last. Sadly, most of the ladies wanted to do their thangs with families and babies and hubbies, so the group broke up. They never even put out an album until 1984! How crazy! Some of the original members are back together and tour to this day. If they come through your town, hit it up because I bet it would be boot scootin'.

Remember that time some ballers decided to name their band the Exciting Voices. Took guts but IT AIN'T BRAGGING IF IT'S TRUE, whatever that means. Also, I got that picture from Evelyn Freeman's driver's license. JOKE CITY .

This single was released in 1958 and I dare you not to start shaking along. How much hollering is taking place? Also, that thumping drum line? Jesus H. It's not really known for sure, but supposedly there are around 14 people in the Exciting Voices. And then Ms. Evelyn, who has a Master's in destroying my ear drums (in the best way possible). Take a listen and see how Evelyn is so intense, she doesn't even give you time to answer the question she poses.

Every once in a while, the channel ABC Family offers me something great. Of course, they take out all the sexual stuff and bleep the bad words, but still. This morning, I happened to stumble upon a showing of Robin Hood: Men in Tights, the Mel Brooks classic that never gets old. This is one of my favorite scenes and really emphasizes why the other new Robin Hood can just go to hell.
