peter funch

So I stumbled across this artist the other day on some blog. I'm so obsessed with his photographs. Peter Funch takes several images in the same spot and then makes a composite image with a theme. A world of yawners! A world of children! A world of airplanes on the beach! How tight is this guy? Once again, a reminder that I don't do much with my life except adding cheese to instant grits and thinking THAT'S creative. Check out more of his work here.

tight person of the day: chet baker

Earlier I was cleaning my room and I had a big decision to make. What music should I listen to? This is a big deal for me, so don't hate! If I'm doing something that requires the television being turned off, it's music time. And I always need to find the perfect tune to go with the weather/my mood/what I'm doing. So since today was rainy and a little gross and I was feeling tired and a little grumpy, I put on a little Chet Baker to help me feel better! It worked!

Chet Baker is a super relaxing trumpet player who specializes in that tight "cool jazz" sound. Chet really rose to fame playing with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet in the fifties. In this band, he had a magical solo on a little ditty called "My Funny Valentine" which would eventually become one of his sig tunes. Also, he was kind of a hottie, let's be real. He perfected a baller West Coast sound.

Anywayz, Chet dabbled in acting but also in the heroin and soon developed a pretty bad habit. I don't want to take away from his great talent, but the drugs def affected his career and and would eventually end his life. Chet moved to Europe in the seventies and enjoyed a semi-comeback before dying tragically in 1988. Even though his story is sad, perhaps it will pique your interest and inspire you to check out more Chet. A movie, Let's Get Lost, was made about his life in 1988 and is super tight.

The thing is, he's a serious jazz legend. The song I'm sharing today is almost guaranteed to get you in the chill zone. I'm also serious about dancing to this at my wedding. Wedding reference #988833. DEAL WITH IT, AMERICA. This song is perfect for a rainy Monday, so sit back and enjoy a little Chet on me.

cat at work

Oh, hi. So I don't know about you, but I had a serious case of the Mondays today. Maybe it's just that time of year. Also, it was really rainy and cloudy in Austin today which really sets the mood. I'm really ready for summer! Thank G for teacher summers - although I will really miss working with my friends and this group of students. Thanks to all those that listened to my ass on the radio! Special shout-out to Tommie, for listening AND making a pledge. Also Clint "Soul Man" Morehead. May your radio moment live forever in infamy.

Here's a special video to help you make it through the week. Just check how super frustrated this kitty is at his job! The thing is, I know this is totally fakers, but I don't care. I love the cat moaning sound and the keyboard clickety-clack. I love this cat. He's so stressed! I bet he has a secret candy drawer and some major eye rolls for his boss. Loves it.

Just remember: you probs have it easier than this cat. Or maybe not. Either way, have a great week!

more j.j. cale

i will not quit singing this man's praises.

wes montgomery - impressions

I am really into watching this right now. I am super mesmerized by how casually he is just sitting there playing! How cocky?

Wes is a jazz guitarist and a totally confident baller. I first heard of Wes because he released some albums where he covered super popular songs as melodic jazz guitar tunes but I like watching/listening to his solos. He's pretty awesome. This could quickly slip into "boring" jazz talk so I'll wrap it up. Just watch.

henson's 11

This is the cheesiest thing I have ever seen but it gave me a few LOL moments. Hearing Kermie with the Cloon's voice is cracking me up. And Fozzie as Brad Pitt. AND THAT MUPPET PLAYING ANDY GARCIA. I almost fell over. Anyway, good for a laugh. I will post anything about the Muppets and this proves it.

googly eyes

Man, April 20th is such a weird day. Some crazy shit has happened on this day and around this time of year. It's also a special day for a special group of drug users. Holla back. Anywayz, I thought this would be a good time to lighten the load with something festive and silly. Check out this guy's photostream on Flickr. He is making me LOL right now with his photos of people and animals with giant googly eyes. Good idea. That baby is getting my goat big time.

one year of tightness

ZOMG, you guys. I totally got busy with sitting on my ass and watching TBS and I forgot to celebrate the first birthday of this little blog right here. Here's a picture of me eating the cake I made for the event.

Yes, a year ago, in April 2008, Chaps and I were like, "Let's start a blog that will change the world" and WE DID. Sike. But it's been really fun. Thanks to all the contributors who have added some tightness to the posts over this past year. Thanks to all the readers who actually still read even after I talk about my future wedding and what I eat WAY TOO MUCH. Love you.

In other exciting news, I will be back on the radio on this coming Friday, April 24. D.J.J.G. will welcome me back to his Psychedelic Boogaloo show on KVRX 91.7 FM from 7-8 pm. I will post more info as we get closer, but I hope all of you can listen. D.J.J.G. is the tightest in town, y'all.

Thanks again for reading!

tight person of the day: bill coday

Someday, if I ever make it to the Pearly Gates, I want to roll up in a super sweet pink Cadillac. Then I want to get out and it will smell like Little Deli everywhere. I'll order a roast beef with cheddar on a kaiser and maybe a deviled egg, and then turn around and Bill Coday is going to be sitting in a giant plush recliner just like that. He's going to welcome me to the great gig in the sky and then we'll listen to some records and maybe have a delicious dessert of Ben and Jerry's Phish food flavor. Dang! Greatest vision ever.

Bill Coday is a super tight bluesy singer. I have been listening to one song of his on repeat and I figured it was time to share. Bill was discovered singing in Chicago and later met up with Willie Mitchell, the crazy awesome producer from Memphis. Together, these bros came up with some great soul numbers. One of them is the song that has been on my rotash BIG TIME. I like Bill's voice and I love the longing in the song. I like any song where I can dream of slow-dancing. The slow and SAXY horns. Thanks for helping with that, Willie.

Mr. Coday left this great green earth in June of 2008. So many soul greats gone in 08. At least we still have these recordings to put on and spread the joy and happiness. I hope my dream didn't creep you and you won't think of that non-stop when you listen to this song/I kinda want you think about it.

Bill Coday - You're Gonna Want Me

new website craze

So, I've been noticing a new wave on the webz lately. A crop of new websites has popped up with supremely tight names. These maybe be potentially NSFW (just so you know). This new craze is sweeping the nation! These are sites devoted to awesome things or people, like Neil Patrick Harris. And they all start with an exclamation heard 'round the world: Fuck Yeah. They are like LOLCats sorta, sometimes. Just look and you'll see what I mean.

Please browse through the limitless opportunities presented to you. Technology rules! From Fuck Yeah, Sharks to Fuck Yeah, Ryan Gosling, there is something for everyone.

Lately, I've really been getting into Fuck Yeah, Cilantro.

kid drummer

Photobucket

Please check out this amazing kid drummer. This kid is only 4 years old! He's seriously some kind of space alien because this kid is playing drums better than I can balance my checkbook. Apparently he's a genius that learned how to do this simply by watching other drummer videos on YouTube. My favorite part is the headphones! His parents are playing it safe, y'all.

Oh, he has his own channel, by the way. I cannot get over this kid. And he looks so happy!

tight person of the day: velma perkins

Oh, tight. I've found who I am coming back as in my next life. Frrl. Now this lady here is a sweet soul lady. When I listen to Velma, it's usually when I have a pint of ice cream and a box of tissues. Then I channel surf to see if You've Got Mail is on. You know how I do!

I don't know much about Velma, besides the fact that she rules my face. I have a few Velma songs from my amazing purchase of Twinight's Lunar Rotation from the Eccentric Soul series that was released by the Numero Group aka People Who Know What They Are Doing. They do a really good job with these. This one is especially comprehensive and features great tunes from the Chicago area Twinight label. This is also where I discovered Renaldo Domino. I'm sharing one of the songs today just to get you pumped. Seriously, as soon as this starts, aren't you mesmerized? If you know more about Velma and can shed some light on this beautiful lady, please let me know.

This is a serious slow dance song. I really want to dance to this on the street like that one part in The Notebook. Sike. But by now you probably know I'm only half kidding about that.

Velma Perkins - I'll Always Love You

dr. steve brule

You guys. I am so into this video. I love this character. Dr. Steve Brule is played by John C. Reilly on Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! He wears nerd glasses and has crazy hair and a dumb mind and IT GOES STRAIGHT TO MY HEART. Some of you may have fallen in love with Dr. Steve Brule first when he was really super drunk. How lovable?

Please watch Dr. Steve deal with making a panini. I've already watched this almost thirteen times today. No lies.

the french

"On 14 July 1990 Jarre broke his own record in the Guinness Book of Records again with a concert at La Défense, Paris where 2.5 million people watched Jarre light up the Parisian business district. The album En Attendant Cousteau (Waiting for Cousteau) was also released in this year, and was dedicated to the French sea explorer, Jacques Cousteau."

dustbuster

There are times in life when I am truly sad I didn't think of something myself. Like the Snuggie, or the ShamWow or whatever. But I am BEYOND DISTRESSED that I didn't make this music video right here. The TuTu Band has taken life to a new level for me. Please watch their video for the super tight single, "Dustbuster."

Some things I want to open for discussion about this video:
1. The ladies dressed as clowns.
2. The mouth on the Dirt Devil handheld.
3. How can I get to a dance lesson taught by the lead singer?
4. Is that one guy holding a side of beef?
5. Where the hell has this band been all my life?

happy birthday, marvin gaye!

Marvin Gaye aka Life Changer of the Century was born on April 2. Today Marvin would have been 70. Still a youngster. I hope somewhere he is having a wonderful celebration. Here's to a pure and gentle soul who makes me love music more every day!

Love you, Marv.
